Uma equipa de economistas da Suíça e da Alemanha descobriu, através de testes de modelos, que duas teorias importantes criadas para explicar porque é que os humanos se envolvem em cooperação entre si tendem a falhar quando examinadas minuciosamente. No seu artigo publicado na revista Nature, o grupo descreve como novos modelos e testes de campo mostraram que foi apenas quando as duas teorias foram combinadas que se revelaram capazes de descrever cenários onde os humanos cooperaram.
Os humanos cooperam uns com os outros em vários níveis e em diferentes tipos de situações. A investigação sugere que a razão pela qual os humanos evoluíram de uma forma que promove a cooperação é que esta conduz a uma eventual recompensa para ambas as partes. Esta investigação também demonstrou que é muito mais fácil explicar como e porquê a reciprocidade funciona quando é claro que a pessoa que realiza o primeiro ato tem uma certeza razoável de que voltará a ver a outra pessoa, o que provavelmente a levará a retribuir.
Muito mais difícil de explicar é a razão pela qual os humanos por vezes se envolvem em comportamentos que normalmente seriam vistos como um primeiro passo de cooperação, quando não há garantia de que voltarão a ver o destinatário e, portanto, podem não colher uma recompensa. Neste novo estudo, a equipe de pesquisa testou teorias que tentaram explicar tal comportamento.
Os pesquisadores começaram seus esforços observando que existem duas teorias principais que explicam tal comportamento; uma oferece uma hipótese que sugere o comportamento que evoluiu em torno dos grupos ancestrais e das regras que se formaram ao longo do tempo. A segunda sugere que tal comportamento se deve à competição entre grupos.
A equipa criou modelos para testar ambas as teorias e descobriu que nenhuma das abordagens conduzia a um apoio fiável à reciprocidade e, portanto, a recompensas pelo comportamento continuado. Mas descobriram que quando agruparam as duas teorias, as coisas funcionaram muito melhor. Interações repetidas dentro dos grupos, embora também houvesse competição, poderiam levar a uma cooperação superaditiva, onde os dois mecanismos interagiam sinergicamente para apoiar altos níveis de cooperação dentro do grupo e baixos níveis de cooperação fora do grupo.
A equipa aventurou-se na Papua Nova Guiné para testar as suas ideias em dois grupos de pessoas que vivem lá, os Perepka e os Ngenika. Em experiências que envolveram dar dinheiro a uma pessoa e pedir-lhe que o partilhasse com um parceiro, descobriram que a aplicação de ambas as teorias produzia resultados semelhantes aos que tinham encontrado com os seus modelos.
