A análise de lâminas delgadas confeccionadas a partir do fragmento de um osso longo de um titanossauro estudado em microsca³pio permitiu que a docente do Departamento de Geologia e Recursos Naturais do Instituto de Geociências (IG) da Unicamp Fresia Ricardi Branco identificasse a presença de microorganismos fossilizados. A partir daa, uma parceria entre pesquisadores da Unicamp, da Universidade Federal de Sa£o Carlos (Ufscar) e da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) foi decisiva para identificar pela primeira vez a presença de parasitas sanguaneos preservados dentro do osso de um dinossauro. A descoberta acaba de ser publicada na revista Cretaceous Research e éuma novidade no mundo dos estudos da Paleontologia, a ciência que estuda os registros da vida do passado da Terra e o seu desenvolvimento ao longo do tempo geola³gico.

e a presença de parasitas nos canais vasculares
Durante seu mestrado, em 2018, no Programa de Pa³s-Graduação em Geociências/IG, o paleonta³logo Tito Aureliano e sua orientadora Fresia Ricardi Branco analisaram um osso de dinossauro de mais de 80 milhões de anos coletado por uma equipe da Ufscar em um afloramento da Formação Adamantina, da Bacia Bauru, no estado de Sa£o Paulo. Tito teve a tarefa de investigar um material no qual a paleonta³loga Aline Ghilardi, da UFRN, havia identificado no ano anterior caroa§os esponjosos que se projetavam dasuperfÍcie a³ssea.
Fresia identificou inicialmente a presença de um microfa³ssil dentro dos canais vasculares do osso do dinossauro. “No microsca³pio, observamos a presença de corpos fusiformes dentro dos canais vasculares que não correspondiam a nenhuma estrutura a³ssea e que, pelo seu formato constante, poderiam ser mais bem caracterizados com microorganismos fossilizados junto com o ossoâ€, aponta a docente da Unicamp.
Uma vez que a pesquisa da amostra era parte do estudo desenvolvido por Tito em seu mestrado, co-orientado por Marcelo Fernandes, da Ufscar, o então aluno da Unicamp começou a procurar a que grupo de microfa³sseis poderiam pertencer, por que estavam fossilizadas dentro dos ossos e qual seria a sua influaªncia para o dinossauro. Tito encontrou mais de 10 microorganismos fossilizados e foi assim que convidou a paleoparasita³loga Carolina Nascimento, da Ufscar, para colaborar com a pesquisa. Carolina detectou, então, mais de 70 microrganismos similares preservados dentro do osso do titanossauro e conseguiu determinar que pertenceriam a algum tipo de parasita sanguaneo.
Foi a primeira vez que se identificou organismos como esses preservados dentro de ossos de dinossauros osantes disso, parasitas fa³sseis haviam sido identificados apenas associados a insetos preservados em a¢mbares ou em copra³litos (fezes fossilizadas). Tambanãm foi possível apontar na pesquisa, atravanãs de uma tomografia realizada na USP, que o dinossauro sofria de osteomielite aguda.
De acordo com Fresia, lâminas delgadas de ossos são corriqueiramente analisadas em estudos de paleohistologia, ramo da Paleontologia que estuda a estrutura microsca³pica de ossos fa³sseis, e fossildiagaªnese, que estuda modificações fasico-químicas acontecidas durante a fossilização dos restos orga¢nicos. “A partir do estudo das lâminas petrogra¡ficas de diferentes porções dos ossos épossível conhecer a idade do indivaduo, remodelações e demais estruturas ósseas, bem como as lesões que essas estruturas sofreram em vida ou durante a fossilização, além do pra³prio processo de fossilização que permitiu a sua preservaçãoâ€, afirma.
A análise geoquímica realizada no Instituto de Geociências da Unicamp indicou a fossilização excepcional desses organismos por um processo chamado de fosfatização, que teria ocorrido de forma rápida, permitindo a preservação dos corpos dos microorganismos dentro dos canais vasculares do hospedeiro, antes que degradassem. Um novo estudo devera¡ descrever os parasitas e identificar a que grupo pertencem, além refinar a sua caracterização geoquímica utilizando técnicas de imageamento.
