Apesar de ser uma fonte de energia renovável, a utilização de biocombustíveis é controversa, uma vez que o cultivo de poucas culturas altamente produtivas para combustível pode levar à perda de biodiversidade nos sistemas de cultivo onde a biomassa é produzida. Um sistema de cultivo refere-se às culturas, à sua sequência e às práticas de gestão num determinado campo.
Agora, investigadores nos EUA compararam comunidades de formigas em diferentes tipos de sistemas de cultivo bioenergético para compreender melhor como estes sistemas moldam as comunidades bióticas e as suas funções. Os resultados são publicados em Frontiers in Conservation Science.
"Encontramos diferentes comunidades de formigas quando comparamos culturas anuais , sistemas perenes e diversas policulturas perenes com muitas espécies de plantas", disse o primeiro autor, Dr. Nathan Haan, que coletou dados para este estudo na Estação Biológica Kellogg da Michigan State University e atualmente pesquisa o ecologia de insetos como professor assistente na Universidade de Kentucky.
"Os sistemas perenes de cultivo bioenergético, especialmente aqueles que incorporam mais diversidade de plantas , dão origem a uma comunidade de formigas diferente e mais diversificada do que os sistemas mais simples."
Formigas e colheitas
As formigas são atores abundantes e influentes nas pastagens e nos agroecossistemas. Eles podem ser importantes predadores, dispersores de sementes e engenheiros de solo. “Se grandes partes de nossas paisagens se tornarem dedicadas ao cultivo de culturas para combustível, as formigas serão as principais candidatas para investigar como as comunidades de insetos podem diferir de cultura para cultura”, explicou Haan.
Os pesquisadores examinaram 10 sistemas de cultivo bioenergético em uma matriz experimental em Michigan. Os sistemas incluíam culturas anuais (milho e dois tipos de milho-vassoura), sistemas perenes simples (plurianuais) (duas gramíneas, miscanthus e uma mistura de gramíneas nativas) e diversos sistemas perenes (pradaria reconstruída, vegetação voluntária sucessional e um curto -sistema de corte rotativo com choupos).
Os pesquisadores capturaram quase 10 mil formigas individuais pertencentes a 22 espécies. Em ecossistemas complexos, as formigas desempenhavam papéis mais funcionais – por exemplo, predadoras ou dispersoras de sementes – do que em sistemas simples. A riqueza de espécies foi maior nos sistemas diversos e menor nos sistemas simples. A composição da comunidade também diferiu: foram encontradas algumas espécies de formigas comuns em todos os sistemas de cultivo; espécies mais raras, entretanto, só apareceram em sistemas perenes com diversidade de plantas.
Otimizando colheitas para combustível
As culturas testadas apresentam diferentes prós e contras para a produção de biocombustíveis , apontaram os pesquisadores. Alguns deles são mais produtivos, mas têm pouco valor de conservação; outros, embora menos produtivos, trazem benefícios de conservação. Por exemplo, as plantas perenes podem ajudar a armazenar carbono no subsolo, nas suas raízes. As pradarias mistas também podem ser muito produtivas e são muito mais biodiversas, no entanto, há mais incógnitas sobre como usar a sua biomassa para gerar produtos finais.
“É uma questão de compreender os trade-offs e descobrir como otimizá-los”, destacou Haan. Atualmente, 40% do milho produzido nos EUA é usado para produzir etanol, que é frequentemente usado como combustível. Cultivar esta quantidade de milho em monoculturas, no entanto, é uma solução inerentemente insustentável para alimentar o futuro.
“Há uma série de outros sistemas de cultivo que poderiam ser adoptados e tornar-se pilares. Precisamos de compreender quais deles são amigos da biodiversidade e quais não são”, disse Haan.
Base de produção de biocombustíveis
Os investigadores esperam que o seu estudo informe decisões sobre quais culturas podem ser utilizadas para a produção sustentável de biocombustíveis, onde essas culturas são cultivadas e como são geridas.
“A bioenergia parece entrar e sair de moda nas notícias e no discurso público , mas as projeções são de que precisaremos de implantar culturas bioenergéticas em grande escala nas próximas décadas, a fim de combater com sucesso as alterações climáticas”, disse Haan.
Embora a presente pesquisa tenha sido realizada em um único conjunto experimental, espera-se que os padrões gerais sejam semelhantes em outros lugares, disse Haan. É, no entanto, necessário recolher informações mais específicas noutros contextos.
