Uma nova ferramenta de inteligência artificial (IA) que tira inferências lógicas sobre a função de proteínas desconhecidas promete ajudar os cientistas a desvendar o funcionamento interno da célula.
Desenvolvida pelo pesquisador de bioinformática da KAUST Maxat Kulmanov e colegas, a ferramenta supera os métodos analíticos existentes para prever funções de proteínas e é até capaz de analisar proteínas sem correspondências claras nos conjuntos de dados existentes.
A pesquisa aparece na Nature Machine Intelligence.
O modelo, denominado DeepGO-SE, aproveita grandes modelos de linguagem semelhantes aos usados por ferramentas generativas de IA, como Chat-GPT. Em seguida, emprega implicação lógica para tirar conclusões significativas sobre funções moleculares com base em princípios biológicos gerais sobre o modo como as proteínas funcionam.
Essencialmente, capacita os computadores a processar logicamente os resultados, construindo modelos de parte do mundo – neste caso, a função das proteínas – e inferindo o cenário mais plausível com base no bom senso e no raciocínio sobre o que deveria acontecer nestes modelos mundiais.
“Este método tem muitas aplicações”, diz Robert Hoehndorf, chefe do Grupo de Pesquisa em Bio-Ontologia KAUST, que supervisionou esta pesquisa, “especialmente quando é necessário raciocinar sobre dados e hipóteses geradas por uma rede neural ou outro modelo de aprendizado de máquina. "
Kulmanov e Hoehndorf colaboraram com Stefan Arold da KAUST, bem como com pesquisadores do Instituto Suíço de Bioinformática, para avaliar a capacidade do modelo de decifrar as funções das proteínas cujo papel no corpo é desconhecido.
A ferramenta utilizou com sucesso dados relativos à sequência de aminoácidos de uma proteína pouco compreendida e suas interações conhecidas com outras proteínas e previu com precisão suas funções moleculares. O modelo foi tão preciso que o DeepGO-SE foi classificado entre os 20 primeiros entre mais de 1.600 algoritmos em uma competição internacional de ferramentas de previsão de funções.
A equipe KAUST está agora usando a ferramenta para investigar as funções de proteínas enigmáticas descobertas em plantas que prosperam no ambiente extremo do deserto da Arábia Saudita. Eles esperam que as descobertas sejam úteis para identificar novas proteínas para aplicações biotecnológicas e gostariam que outros pesquisadores adotassem a ferramenta.
Como explica Kulmanov, “a capacidade do DeepGO-SE de analisar proteínas não caracterizadas pode facilitar tarefas como descoberta de medicamentos, análise de vias metabólicas, associações de doenças, engenharia de proteínas, triagem de proteínas específicas de interesse e muito mais”.
