Através do voo, os insetos colonizaram o planeta e promoveram a diversificação massiva das plantas com flores, agindo como polinizadores eficientes. Eles também permitiram a evolução de outras criaturas como répteis, pássaros e mamíferos, servindo como amplo suprimento de alimento.
O voo evoluiu quatro vezes na história da vida na Terra: em pássaros, morcegos, pterossauros e insetos. Os primeiros três grupos de animais desenvolveram suas asas a partir dos braços, tornando essas asas fáceis de entender, já que outros animais semelhantes têm ossos e musculatura análogos. As asas dos insetos, entretanto, não têm músculos nem nervos. Em vez disso, são controlados por músculos localizados dentro do corpo que operam um sistema de roldanas semelhantes a marionetes dentro de uma dobradiça complexa na base da asa.
“A dobradiça da asa da mosca é talvez a estrutura mais misteriosa e subestimada na história da vida”, diz Michael Dickinson, professor de Bioengenharia e Aeronáutica da Caltech, Esther M. e Abe M. Zarem, e diretor executivo de biologia e engenharia biológica. A forma como um inseto controla esta estrutura minúscula e intricada da mosca da fruta Drosophila melanogaster é o tema de um novo estudo realizado por Dickinson e seus colegas. Usando câmeras de alta velocidade e aprendizado de máquina, o laboratório de Dickinson coletou dados sobre dezenas de milhares de batidas de asas de moscas e criou um mapa de como os músculos da mosca manipulam o movimento da dobradiça da asa para criar manobras de voo aerodinâmicas ágeis.
O estudo é descrito em um artigo publicado na revista Nature em 17 de abril.
A dobradiça da asa de uma mosca contém 12 músculos de controle, com um neurônio conectado a cada um. Para contextualizar, embora um beija-flor possua a mesma capacidade de manobra de uma mosca, ele usa milhares de neurônios motores para executar manobras de voo semelhantes.
“Não queríamos apenas prever o movimento das asas; queríamos saber o papel dos músculos individuais”, diz Johan Melis (PhD '23), o primeiro autor do estudo. “Queríamos unir a biomecânica da dobradiça da asa aos circuitos neurais que a controlam”.
Primeiro, a equipe criou D. melanogaster geneticamente modificado, no qual os músculos que controlam a dobradiça da asa brilhariam com luz fluorescente quando ativados. Os pesquisadores então colocaram as moscas em uma câmara com três câmeras de alta velocidade capazes de capturar 15.000 quadros por segundo para medir o movimento das asas, e um microscópio para detectar a ativação fluorescente dos músculos das dobradiças das asas da mosca. Depois de coletar mais de 80 mil batidas de asas, a equipe aplicou técnicas de aprendizado de máquina para processar o grande volume de dados e gerar um mapa de como os 12 minúsculos músculos de controle agem juntos para regular com precisão o movimento das asas. Modelos computacionais anteriores de voo de mosca descreviam simplesmente o padrão de movimento das asas. O novo modelo, por outro lado, incorpora como os músculos de controle alteram a mecânica da dobradiça da asa, produzindo movimento da asa.
No trabalho de acompanhamento, a equipe pretende criar um modelo detalhado baseado na física que incorpore a biomecânica da dobradiça com a aerodinâmica das asas e o circuito neural subjacente dentro do cérebro da mosca. Os investigadores também planeiam recolher dados de outras espécies de insectos voadores, como mosquitos e abelhas, para compreender como as estruturas das asas evoluíram para permitir comportamentos de voo sofisticados.
O objetivo final é compreender a ligação neurobiológica entre o cérebro de uma mosca e o movimento das suas asas. "A dobradiça da asa é apenas o hardware; a verdadeira paixão em nosso laboratório tem sido a interface cérebro-corpo", diz Dickinson.
