Pesquisadores do Laboratório Nacional Lawrence Livermore (LLNL) descobriram um novo mecanismo que pode aumentar a eficiência da produção de hidrogênio por meio da divisão da água.
Esta pesquisa, publicada na ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces , foi destaque na capa do periódico e fornece novos insights sobre o comportamento da reatividade da água e da transferência de prótons sob confinamento extremo, sugerindo estratégias potenciais para melhorar o desempenho de eletrocatalisadores para produção de hidrogênio, ao mesmo tempo em que protege o catalisador da degradação.
A produção de hidrogênio via divisão fotoeletroquímica da água tem sido considerada há muito tempo um "Santo Graal" da eletroquímica. Uma chave para a ampla implantação dessa tecnologia é o desenvolvimento de um sistema eletrocatalítico ativo, durável e acessível.
Juntamente com a Universidade de Columbia e a Universidade da Califórnia, em Irvine, os cientistas do LLNL desenvolveram uma nova estratégia para melhorar o equilíbrio entre atividade e durabilidade dos eletrocatalisadores encapsulando o catalisador com camadas ultrafinas e porosas de dióxido de titânio.
A equipe da Columbia liderada por Daniel Esposito havia relatado anteriormente que os óxidos nanoporosos cobrindo nanopartículas de platina poderiam melhorar a durabilidade do sistema sem comprometer a atividade catalítica , ao contrário da visão comumente aceita: cobrir a superfície do catalisador comprometerá severamente a atividade catalítica. A estrutura nanoporosa também parece melhorar a seletividade ao favorecer reações de divisão de água em relação a processos concorrentes.
Em seu estudo, os cientistas do LLNL usaram simulações avançadas de dinâmica molecular (MD) com um potencial de aprendizado de máquina derivado de cálculos de primeiros princípios. Esta plataforma permite a exploração da superfície de energia potencial e da cinética de reação com precisão extraordinária em escalas além do alcance da abordagem convencional de primeiros princípios. As simulações revelaram que a água confinada dentro de nanoporos menores que 0,5 nanômetros mostra mecanismos de reatividade e transferência de prótons significativamente alterados. Em particular, a equipe observou que o confinamento reduz a energia de ativação para o transporte de prótons.
"Nossas descobertas demonstram que em ambientes extremamente confinados, a energia de ativação para dissociação de água é reduzida, levando a eventos de transferência de prótons mais frequentes e transporte rápido de prótons", disse Hyuna Kwon, cientista de materiais no Quantum Simulations Group e Laboratory for Energy Applications for the Future (LEAF) do LLNL.
