Um antigo mistério no estudo das geleiras foi recentemente - e por acaso - resolvido por uma equipe liderada pelo astrobia³logo e cientista da Terra Eric Gaidos da Universidade do Havaa em MÄnoa. Suas descobertas foram publicadas esta semana na revista Geophysical Research Letters .
O mistério envolve inundações ou "jokulhlaups" que emergem de forma repentina e imprevisível de geleiras ou calotas polares como as da Isla¢ndia, onde o calor vulca¢nico derrete o gelo e a águase acumula em lagos sob as geleiras. Os cientistas hámuito estudam o desenvolvimento dessas inundações, que são algumas das maiores da Terra.
"Essas inundações podem afetar o movimento de algumas geleiras e são um perigo significativo na Isla¢ndia", disse Gaidos, professor da Escola de Ciência e Tecnologia do Oceano e da Terra de UH MÄnoa (SOEST). "Mas o mecanismo e o momento do inicio dessas enchentes não foram compreendidos."
Então, em junho de 2015, uma sanãrie inesperada de eventos revelou como essas enchentes comea§aram.
Naquele vera£o, Gaidos e seus colegas abriram um buraco em um dos lagos islandeses para estudar sua vida microbiana. Ao coletar amostras atravanãs do poa§o, a equipe percebeu uma corrente descendente, como um ralo de banheira, no buraco.
"Descobrimos que a geleira pode conter corpos menores de águaacima dos lagos alimentados pelo derretimento do vera£o", disse Gaidos. "Se esse corpo de águaestiver hidraulicamente conectado ao lago, a pressão no lago aumenta e isso permite que a águacomece a escoar por baixo da geleira."
"O fluxo era tão forte que quase perdemos nossos sensores e equipamento de amostragem no buraco", disse Gaidos. "Na³s presumimos que havaamos acidentalmente conectado uma massa de águadentro da geleira ao lago abaixo. Essa massa de águaestava drenando rapidamente para o lago."

Poucos dias depois, depois que a equipe deixou a geleira, o lago foi drenado em uma inundação . Felizmente, a enchente foi pequena e os islandeses tem um elaborado sistema de alerta antecipado em seus rios, de modo que nenhuma pessoa se feriu ou a infraestrutura foi danificada neste evento, garantiu Gaidos.
Os pesquisadores usaram um modelo computacional de escoamento do fluxo pelo buraco e seu efeito no lago para mostrar que isso pode ter provocado a enchente.

Embora a equipe tenha feito uma conexão artificial com o lago em 2015, conexões naturais podem se formar quando a águada chuva ou neve derretida se acumula nas fendas e a pressão eventualmente força uma rachadura atravanãs da geleira para o lago. Esta descoberta fornece uma nova compreensão de como essas inundações podem comea§ar e como isso depende do clima e da estação.
Colaboradores na Isla¢ndia continuam a pesquisar esse fena´meno usando eco-som de ra¡dio para procurar corpos d' águadentro do gelo, bem como estudar o lago maior abaixo dele.
