A vida de Karin sofreu uma reviravolta dramática quando um acidente agrícola lhe custou o braço direito há mais de 20 anos. Desde então, ela tem sofrido dores insuportáveis nos membros fantasmas. “Parecia que eu estava constantemente com a mão em um moedor de carne, o que criava um alto nível de estresse e eu tinha que tomar altas doses de vários analgésicos.”
Além da dor intratável, ela descobriu que as próteses convencionais eram desconfortáveis ??e pouco confiáveis e, portanto, de pouca ajuda na vida diária. Tudo isso mudou quando ela recebeu tecnologia biônica inovadora que lhe permitiu usar confortavelmente uma prótese muito mais funcional durante todo o dia. A maior integração entre a biônica e o membro residual de Karin também aliviou sua dor. “Para mim, esta pesquisa significou muito, pois me proporcionou uma vida melhor”.
Uma fusão notável de humano e máquina
A fixação mecânica e o controle confiável são dois dos maiores desafios na substituição artificial de membros. Pessoas com perda de membros muitas vezes rejeitam até mesmo as próteses sofisticadas disponíveis comercialmente devido a estas razões, depois de experimentarem uma fixação dolorosa e desconfortável com controlabilidade limitada e pouco confiável.
Um grupo multidisciplinar de engenheiros e cirurgiões resolveu esses problemas desenvolvendo uma interface homem-máquina que permite que a prótese seja confortavelmente fixada ao esqueleto do usuário por meio de osseointegração, ao mesmo tempo que permite a conexão elétrica com o sistema nervoso por meio de eletrodos implantados em nervos e músculos . Esta pesquisa está agora publicada na revista Science Robotics .
A pesquisa foi liderada pelo Prof. Max Ortiz Catalan, chefe de pesquisa em próteses neurais do Bionics Institute na Austrália e fundador do Center for Bionics and Pain Research (CBPR) na Suécia.

Uma característica fundamental da nova tecnologia biônica é a fixação esquelética da prótese através da osseointegração – o processo pelo qual o tecido ósseo abraça o titânio criando uma forte ligação mecânica.
O professor Rickard Brånemark, pesquisador afiliado do MIT, professor associado da Universidade de Gotemburgo e CEO da Integrum, liderou a cirurgia e trabalhou com osseointegração para próteses de membros desde que foram usadas pela primeira vez em humanos. "A integração biológica dos implantes de titânio no tecido ósseo cria oportunidades para avançar ainda mais no tratamento dos amputados", disse o Prof. Brånemark.
"Ao combinar a osseointegração com cirurgia reconstrutiva, eletrodos implantados e IA, podemos restaurar a função humana de uma forma sem precedentes. O nível de amputação abaixo do cotovelo apresenta desafios específicos, e o nível de funcionalidade alcançado representa um marco importante para o campo das extremidades avançadas reconstruções como um todo."
Os nervos e músculos do membro residual foram reorganizados para fornecer mais fontes de informações de controle motor para a prótese. O Dr. Paolo Sassu conduziu esta parte da cirurgia que ocorreu no Hospital Universitário Sahlgrenska, na Suécia, onde também liderou o primeiro transplante de mão realizado na Escandinávia.
Dr. Sassu disse: "Dependendo das condições clínicas, podemos oferecer a melhor solução para nossos pacientes, que às vezes é biológica com um transplante de mão, e às vezes é biônica com prótese neuromusculoesquelética. Estamos melhorando continuamente em ambos". Dr. Sassu está atualmente no Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli na Itália, e no Centro de Biônica e Pesquisa em Dor na Suécia.

A mão robótica desenvolvida pela Prensilia, nomeadamente Mia Hand, apresentava componentes motores e sensoriais únicos que permitiam ao utilizador realizar 80% das atividades da vida diária. “A aceitação da prótese é fundamental para o seu uso bem-sucedido”, afirma o Dr. Francesco Clemente, Diretor Geral da Prensilia.
"Além do desempenho técnico, a Prensilia lutou para desenvolver uma mão que pudesse ser totalmente personalizável esteticamente. Mia Hand nasceu para ser mostrada e não escondida. Queríamos que os usuários tivessem orgulho do que são, em vez de vergonha do que foi perdido."
