Uma equipe internacional de astrônomos relata a detecção de dois novos exoplanetas orbitando uma estrela brilhante conhecida como TOI-5126, usando o Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) da NASA. Os novos mundos alienígenas são semelhantes em tamanho ao planeta mais externo do sistema solar. A descoberta foi publicada em 13 de outubro no servidor de pré-impressão arXiv .
Até à data, o TESS identificou cerca de 6.900 candidatos a exoplanetas (TESS Objects of Interest, ou TOI), dos quais 395 foram confirmados até agora. Desde o seu lançamento em abril de 2018, a sonda está a realizar um levantamento de cerca de 200.000 das estrelas mais brilhantes próximas do Sol, com o objetivo de procurar exoplanetas em trânsito.
Agora, um grupo de astrónomos liderado por Tyler R. Fairnington, da Universidade do Sul de Queensland, em Toowoomba, Austrália, confirmou outros dois candidatos a TOI monitorizados pelo TESS. Eles detectaram sinais de trânsito na curva de luz de TOI-5126 - uma estrela anã F brilhante observada com o TESS entre novembro de 2021 e fevereiro de 2022. A natureza planetária destes sinais foi confirmada por observações de acompanhamento, usando principalmente o satélite CHaracterizing ExOplanets da ESA ( Quéops).
“Relatamos a descoberta e validação de dois planetas em torno da brilhante estrela F TOI-5126”, escreveram os pesquisadores no artigo.
O exoplaneta mais próximo da estrela, designado TOI-5126 b, tem um raio de cerca de 4,74 raios terrestres, o que significa que é aproximadamente 22% maior que Netuno. O planeta orbita o hospedeiro a cada 5,46 dias, a uma distância de cerca de 0,065 UA dele. A temperatura de equilíbrio de TOI-5126 b foi estimada em 1.442 K, portanto o planeta foi classificado pelos autores do artigo como um super-Netuno quente.
O segundo planeta relatado no estudo, TOI-5126 c, tem um período orbital de cerca de 17,9 dias e está separado da estrela-mãe por aproximadamente 0,144 UA. Os resultados indicam que TOI-5126 c tem um raio de 3,86 raios terrestres e, portanto, é quase do tamanho de Netuno. O planeta tem uma temperatura de equilíbrio de 971 K e foi classificado como um Netuno quente.
As massas dos novos mundos alienígenas ainda não foram determinadas. No entanto, com base nos modelos de relação massa-raio, os astrônomos estimam que as massas previstas para TOI-5126 b e TOI-5126 c são 21 e 18 massas solares , respectivamente.
Quando se trata da estrela hospedeira TOI-5126, ela é cerca de 24% maior e mais massiva que o sol. A estrela está localizada a cerca de 525 anos-luz de distância, tem uma temperatura efetiva de 6.150 K e tem idade estimada em 800 milhões de anos.
Nas observações finais, os astrónomos sublinharam que uma investigação mais aprofundada do sistema planetário TOI-5126 poderia ajudar-nos a compreender melhor a diferença na composição atmosférica entre um super-Neptuno quente e um Neptuno quente.
