Físicos quânticos da Universidade de Tecnologia de Delft mostraram que é possível controlar e manipular ondas de spin em um chip usando supercondutores pela primeira vez. Essas pequenas ondas em ímãs podem oferecer uma alternativa à eletrônica no futuro. O estudo, publicado na Science , oferece principalmente aos físicos uma nova visão sobre a interação entre ímãs e supercondutores.
“As ondas de spin são ondas num material magnético que podemos usar para transmitir informação”, explica Michael Borst, que liderou a experiência. "Como as ondas de spin podem ser um alicerce promissor para um substituto da eletrônica com eficiência energética, os cientistas têm procurado uma maneira eficiente de controlar e manipular as ondas de spin há anos."
A teoria prevê que os eletrodos metálicos controlam as ondas de spin, mas os físicos quase não viram tais efeitos em experimentos até agora. “O avanço da nossa equipe de pesquisa é que mostramos que podemos de fato controlar as ondas de spin de maneira adequada se usarmos um eletrodo supercondutor ”, diz Toeno van der Sar, professor associado do Departamento de Nanociência Quântica.
Funciona da seguinte forma: Uma onda de spin gera um campo magnético que por sua vez gera uma supercorrente no supercondutor. Essa supercorrente atua como um espelho para a onda de spin. O eletrodo supercondutor reflete o campo magnético de volta para a onda de spin. O espelho supercondutor faz com que as ondas de spin se movam para cima e para baixo mais lentamente, o que torna as ondas facilmente controláveis.
Borst diz: "Quando as ondas de spin passam sob o eletrodo supercondutor, acontece que seu comprimento de onda muda completamente. E variando ligeiramente a temperatura do eletrodo, podemos ajustar a magnitude da mudança com muita precisão."
"Começamos com uma fina camada magnética de granada de ítrio e ferro (YIG), conhecida como o melhor ímã da Terra. Além disso, colocamos um eletrodo supercondutor e outro eletrodo para induzir as ondas de spin. Ao resfriar a -268 graus, nós colocou o eletrodo em um estado supercondutor", diz Van der Sar.
"Foi incrível ver que as ondas de spin ficaram cada vez mais lentas à medida que esfriou. Isso nos dá uma maneira única de manipular as ondas de spin; podemos desviá-las, refleti-las, fazê-las ressoar e muito mais. Mas também nos dá tremendos novos insights sobre as propriedades dos supercondutores."
Os pesquisadores criaram imagens das ondas de spin medindo seu campo magnético com um sensor único, algo essencial para o experimento. Van der Sar diz: "Usamos elétrons no diamante como sensores para os campos magnéticos das ondas de spin. Nosso laboratório é pioneiro nessa técnica. O legal disso é que podemos observar através do supercondutor opaco as ondas de spin abaixo, apenas como se um scanner de ressonância magnética pudesse observar o corpo de alguém através da pele."
“A tecnologia Spin Wave ainda está em sua infância”, diz Borst. "Por exemplo, para fabricar computadores energeticamente eficientes com esta tecnologia, primeiro temos que começar a construir pequenos circuitos para realizar cálculos. Nossa descoberta abre uma porta: eletrodos supercondutores permitem inúmeros circuitos de ondas spin novos e energeticamente eficientes."
“Agora podemos projetar dispositivos baseados em ondas de spin e supercondutores que produzem pouco calor e ondas sonoras ”, acrescenta Van der Sar. “Pense na versão spintrônica de filtros de frequência ou ressonadores, componentes que podem ser encontrados em circuitos eletrônicos de telefones celulares, por exemplo. Ou circuitos que podem servir como transistores ou conectores entre qubits em um computador quântico.”
