Os pesquisadores relatam que desenvolveram um novo material compósito projetado para mudar comportamentos dependendo da temperatura, a fim de realizar tarefas específicas. Esses materiais estão preparados para fazer parte da próxima geração de robótica autônoma que irá interagir com o meio ambiente.
O novo estudo conduzido pela professora de engenharia civil e ambiental Shelly Zhang da Universidade de Illinois Urbana-Champaign e pelo estudante de graduação Weichen Li, em colaboração com o professor Tian Chen e o estudante de pós-graduação Yue Wang da Universidade de Houston, usa algoritmos de computador, dois polímeros distintos e Impressão 3D para engenharia reversa de um material que se expande e contrai em resposta a mudanças de temperatura com ou sem intervenção humana .
Os resultados do estudo são relatados na revista Science Advances .
"Criar um material ou dispositivo que responda de maneiras específicas dependendo de seu ambiente é muito desafiador para conceituar usando apenas a intuição humana - existem tantas possibilidades de design por aí", disse Zhang. "Então, em vez disso, decidimos trabalhar com um algoritmo de computador para nos ajudar a determinar a melhor combinação de materiais e geometria."
A equipe primeiro usou modelagem computacional para conceituar um composto de dois polímeros que pode se comportar de maneira diferente sob várias temperaturas com base na entrada do usuário ou na detecção autônoma.
“Para este estudo, desenvolvemos um material que pode se comportar como borracha macia em baixas temperaturas e como plástico rígido em altas temperaturas”, disse Zhang.
Depois de fabricado em um dispositivo tangível, a equipe testou a capacidade do novo material compósito de responder às mudanças de temperatura para realizar uma tarefa simples: ligar luzes LED.
"Nosso estudo demonstra que é possível projetar um material com capacidade inteligente de detecção de temperatura, e imaginamos que isso será muito útil na robótica", disse Zhang. "Por exemplo, se a capacidade de carga de um robô precisar mudar quando a temperatura mudar, o material 'saberá' adaptar seu comportamento físico para parar ou executar uma tarefa diferente."
Zhang disse que uma das marcas do estudo é o processo de otimização que ajuda os pesquisadores a interpolar a distribuição e as geometrias dos dois materiais poliméricos diferentes necessários.
“Nosso próximo objetivo é usar esta técnica para adicionar outro nível de complexidade ao comportamento programado ou autônomo de um material, como a capacidade de sentir a velocidade de algum tipo de impacto de outro objeto”, disse ela.
