Os aceleradores de partículas apresentam grande potencial para aplicações de semicondutores, imagens médicas e terapia, e pesquisa em materiais, energia e medicina. Mas os aceleradores convencionais exigem bastante espaço de manobra – quilômetros – o que os torna caros e limitam a sua presença a um punhado de laboratórios e universidades nacionais.
Pesquisadores da Universidade do Texas em Austin, vários laboratórios nacionais, universidades europeias e a empresa TAU Systems Inc., sediada no Texas, demonstraram um acelerador de partículas compacto com menos de 20 metros de comprimento que produz um feixe de elétrons com uma energia de 10 bilhões de elétron-volts ( 10 GeV). Existem apenas dois outros aceleradores operando atualmente nos EUA que podem atingir energias de elétrons tão altas, mas ambos têm aproximadamente 3 quilômetros de comprimento.
“Podemos agora atingir essas energias em 10 centímetros”, disse Bjorn “Manuel” Hegelich, professor associado de física na UT e CEO da TAU Systems, referindo-se ao tamanho da câmara onde o feixe foi produzido. Hegelich e sua equipe estão atualmente explorando o uso de seu acelerador, chamado acelerador laser wakefield avançado, para diversos fins. Eles esperam usá-lo para testar até que ponto a eletrônica espacial pode suportar a radiação, para obter imagens das estruturas internas em 3D de novos designs de chips semicondutores e até mesmo para desenvolver novas terapias contra o câncer e técnicas avançadas de imagens médicas.
Esse tipo de acelerador também poderia ser usado para acionar outro dispositivo chamado laser de elétrons livres de raios X , que poderia gravar filmes em câmera lenta de processos em escala atômica ou molecular. Exemplos de tais processos incluem interações medicamentosas com células, alterações dentro das baterias que podem causar incêndio, reações químicas dentro de painéis solares e proteínas virais que mudam de forma ao infectar células.

Durante as últimas décadas, vários grupos de pesquisa desenvolveram versões mais poderosas. O principal avanço de Hegelich e sua equipe depende de nanopartículas. Um laser auxiliar atinge uma placa de metal dentro da célula de gás, que injeta um fluxo de nanopartículas metálicas que aumentam a energia entregue aos elétrons pelas ondas.
O laser é como um barco deslizando sobre um lago, deixando para trás um rastro, e os elétrons navegam nessa onda de plasma como surfistas.
“É difícil entrar em uma onda grande sem ser dominado, então os wake surfistas são arrastados pelos jet skis”, disse Hegelich. "Em nosso acelerador, o equivalente aos jet skis são nanopartículas que liberam elétrons no ponto certo e na hora certa, então eles ficam todos ali na onda. Colocamos muito mais elétrons na onda quando e onde queremos eles sejam, em vez de distribuídos estatisticamente por toda a interação, e esse é o nosso molho secreto."
