O Sistema de Lançamento Espacial Artemis 1 da NASA será lançado no Centro Espacial Kennedy da NASA em novembro de 2022 em Cabo Canaveral, Flórida.
Mais de 50 anos após a última missão Apollo, os Estados Unidos tentarão mais uma vez pousar uma nave na Lua em 25 de janeiro, disse o chefe daquela que poderia ser a primeira empresa privada a pousar com sucesso na superfície lunar.
O módulo de pouso, chamado Peregrine, não terá ninguém a bordo. Foi desenvolvido pela empresa americana Astrobotic, cujo CEO John Thornton disse que transportará instrumentos da NASA para estudar o ambiente lunar em antecipação às missões tripuladas Artemis da NASA.
Há vários anos, a NASA optou por contratar empresas norte-americanas para enviar experiências científicas e tecnologias para a Lua – um programa denominado CLPS.
Estes contratos de preço fixo deverão permitir o desenvolvimento de uma economia lunar e a prestação de serviços de transporte a custos mais baixos.
“Um dos grandes desafios do que estamos tentando aqui é tentar lançar e pousar na superfície da Lua por uma fração do que custaria de outra forma”, disse Thornton na quarta-feira, 29, em uma coletiva de imprensa na base de sua empresa em Pittsburgh.
“Apenas cerca de metade das missões que foram à superfície da Lua foram bem-sucedidas”, disse ele.
“Portanto, é certamente um desafio assustador. Ficarei aterrorizado e emocionado ao mesmo tempo em cada fase disso.”
A decolagem está prevista para 24 de dezembro da Flórida, a bordo do voo inaugural do novo foguete do grupo industrial ULA, batizado de Vulcan Centaur.
A sonda levará então “alguns dias” para alcançar a órbita lunar , mas terá que esperar até 25 de janeiro antes de tentar pousar, para que as condições de luz no local alvo sejam adequadas, disse Thornton.
A descida será realizada de forma autônoma, sem intervenção humana , mas será monitorada a partir do centro de controle da empresa.
Na primavera, a start-up japonesa ispace já havia tentado se tornar a primeira empresa privada a pousar na Lua, mas a missão terminou em acidente. Israel também sofreu um revés em 2019. Apenas quatro países pousaram com sucesso na Lua: os Estados Unidos, a Rússia, a China e, mais recentemente, a Índia.
Além da Astrobotic, a NASA assinou contratos com outras empresas, como Firefly Aerospace, Draper e Intuitive Machines.
Este último deverá decolar a bordo de um foguete SpaceX em janeiro.
“A liderança da NASA está ciente dos riscos e aceitou que algumas destas missões podem não ter sucesso”, disse Chris Culbert, gestor do programa CLPS.
“Mas mesmo que todas as aterragens não sejam bem sucedidas, o CLPS já teve um impacto na infraestrutura comercial necessária para estabelecer uma economia lunar”, disse ele.
Com o seu programa Artemis, a NASA quer estabelecer uma base na superfície da Lua.
