Nosso mundo físico 3D consiste em apenas dois tipos de partículas: bósons, que incluem a luz e o famoso bóson de Higgs; e férmions – os prótons, nêutrons e elétrons que compõem toda a “matéria”, incluindo a presente empresa.
No entanto, físicos teóricos como Ashvin Vishwanath, professor de física George Vasmer Leverett de Harvard, não gostam de se limitar apenas ao nosso mundo. Num cenário 2D, por exemplo, todos os tipos de novas partículas e estados da matéria se tornariam possíveis.
A equipe de Vishwanath usou uma máquina poderosa chamada processador quântico para criar, pela primeira vez, uma nova fase da matéria chamada ordem topológica não-Abeliana. Anteriormente reconhecida apenas na teoria, a equipe demonstrou a síntese e o controle de partículas exóticas chamadas anyons não-abelianos, que não são bósons nem férmions, mas algo intermediário.
Seus resultados foram publicados na Nature em colaboração com pesquisadores da empresa de computação quântica Quantinuum. A equipe de Vishwanath incluiu o ex-aluno da Escola de Pós-Graduação em Artes e Ciências de Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin, Nat Tantivasadakarn '22, agora na Caltech, e o pós-doutorado Ruben Verresen.
Anyons não-abelianos, conhecidos pelos físicos como quase-partículas, só são matematicamente possíveis em um plano 2D. O qualificador “quase” refere-se ao fato de que não são exatamente partículas, mas sim excitações de longa duração através de uma fase específica da matéria – pense nas ondas do oceano – e possuem capacidades especiais de transporte de memória.
Além do fato de que a criação de uma nova fase da matéria é estimulante para a física fundamental, os anyons não-Abelianos têm sido amplamente reconhecidos como uma plataforma potencial para a computação quântica – o que confere ainda mais significado às conquistas da pesquisa.
Anyons não-Abelianos são inerentemente estáveis, ao contrário dos bits quânticos frágeis e propensos a erros, ou qubits, em outras plataformas de computação quântica. Eles podem "lembrar" seu passado enquanto se movimentam - como um mágico embaralhando xícaras com bolas escondidas. Essa propriedade também é o que os torna topológicos, ou seja, capazes de serem dobrados e torcidos sem perder sua identidade central.
Por todas estas razões, qualquer pessoa não-Abeliana poderá algum dia criar qubits ideais – unidades de poder computacional que vão muito além dos computadores clássicos de hoje – se puderem ser criados e controlados em escalas maiores.
“Um caminho muito promissor para a computação quântica estável é usar esses tipos de estados exóticos da matéria como bits quânticos efetivos e fazer computação quântica com eles”, disse Tantivasadakarn. "Então você mitigou em grande parte os problemas de ruído."
Os pesquisadores empregaram alguma criatividade obstinada para perceber seu estado exótico de matéria. Maximizando as capacidades do mais novo processador H2 da Quantinuum, a equipe começou com uma rede de 27 íons aprisionados. Eles usaram medições parciais e direcionadas para aumentar sequencialmente a complexidade de seu sistema quântico, terminando efetivamente com uma função de onda quântica projetada com as propriedades e características exatas das partículas que procuravam.
“A medição é o aspecto mais misterioso da mecânica quântica, levando a paradoxos famosos como o gato de Schrödinger e a numerosos debates filosóficos”, disse Vishwanath. "Aqui usamos medições como uma ferramenta para esculpir o estado quântico de interesse."
Como teórico, Vishwanath valoriza a capacidade de alternar entre diferentes ideias e aplicações da física sem estar preso a uma plataforma ou tecnologia. Mas, no contexto deste trabalho, ele maravilha-se por conseguir não apenas explorar uma teoria, mas também demonstrá-la, particularmente quando o campo da mecânica quântica entra no seu 100º ano .
