Não há dúvida de que a água é significativa. Sem ele, a vida nunca teria começado, e muito menos continuaria hoje – para não mencionar o seu papel no próprio ambiente, com os oceanos cobrindo mais de 70% da Terra.
Mas, apesar de sua onipresença, a água líquida apresenta algumas complexidades eletrônicas que há muito intrigam os cientistas da química, da física e da tecnologia. Por exemplo, a afinidade eletrônica , ou seja, a estabilização energética sofrida por um elétron livre quando capturado pela água, permaneceu pouco caracterizada do ponto de vista experimental.
Mesmo a teoria da estrutura electrónica mais precisa da atualidade não foi capaz de clarificar o quadro, o que significa que quantidades físicas importantes, como a energia à qual os elétrons de fontes externas podem ser injetados na água líquida, permanecem indefinidas. Essas propriedades são cruciais para a compreensão do comportamento dos elétrons na água e podem desempenhar um papel em sistemas biológicos , ciclos ambientais e aplicações tecnológicas como a conversão de energia solar.
Num estudo recente, os investigadores da EPFL Alexey Tal, Thomas Bischoff e Alfredo Pasquarello fizeram avanços significativos na decifração do puzzle. O seu estudo, publicado em Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , aborda a estrutura eletrônica da água utilizando métodos computacionais que vão além das abordagens mais avançadas da atualidade.
Os pesquisadores estudaram a água usando um método baseado na “teoria da perturbação de muitos corpos”. Esta é uma estrutura matemática complexa usada para estudar as interações de múltiplas partículas dentro de um sistema, como elétrons em um sólido ou uma molécula, explorando como essas partículas afetam o comportamento umas das outras, não isoladamente, mas como parte de um grupo maior de interação.
Dito de forma relativamente simples, a teoria da perturbação de muitos corpos é uma forma de calcular e prever as propriedades de um sistema de muitas partículas, levando em consideração todas as interações complexas entre seus componentes.
Mas os físicos ajustaram a teoria com “correções de vértices”: modificações na teoria de perturbação de muitos corpos que explicam as interações complexas entre partículas além das aproximações mais simples.
As correções de vértices refinam a teoria levando em consideração como essas interações afetam os níveis de energia das partículas, por exemplo, sua resposta a campos externos ou sua autoenergia. Resumindo, as correções de vértices levam a previsões mais precisas das propriedades físicas em um sistema de muitas partículas.
Modelando as propriedades eletrônicas da água
Modelar água líquida é particularmente desafiador. Uma molécula de água contém um átomo de oxigênio e dois átomos de hidrogênio , e tanto o seu movimento térmico quanto a natureza quântica de seus núcleos desempenham um papel fundamental. Tendo em conta estes aspectos, os investigadores determinaram com precisão as propriedades eletrônicas da água, tais como o seu potencial de ionização, afinidade eletrônica e band gap. Estas descobertas são essenciais para compreender como a água interage com a luz e outras substâncias a nível eletrônico.
“Nosso estudo dos níveis de energia da água concilia teoria de alto nível com experimento”, diz Alfredo Pasquarello. Alexey Tal enfatiza ainda a importância da nova metodologia: “Graças à descrição avançada da estrutura eletrônica, também conseguimos produzir um espectro de absorção preciso”.
As descobertas têm implicações adicionais.
