Uma nova investigação sobre uma classe obscura de galáxias conhecidas como Objetos Simétricos Compactos, ou CSOs, revelou que estes objetos não são exatamente o que parecem. CSOs são galáxias ativas que hospedam buracos negros supermassivos em seus núcleos. Destes monstruosos buracos negros surgem dois jatos viajando em direções opostas quase à velocidade da luz. Mas em comparação com outras galáxias que possuem jatos ferozes, estes jatos não se estendem por grandes distâncias – são muito mais compactos. Durante muitas décadas, os astrônomos suspeitaram que as OSC eram simplesmente jovens e que os seus jactos acabariam por viajar para distâncias maiores.
Agora, reportando-se em três artigos diferentes no The Astrophysical Journal , uma equipa de investigadores liderada pelo Caltech concluiu que as OSC não são jovens, mas sim levam vidas relativamente curtas.
“Essas OSCs não são jovens”, explica Anthony (Tony) Readhead , Professor Emérito de Astronomia Robinson, que liderou a investigação. “Você não chamaria um cachorro de 12 anos de jovem, mesmo que ele tenha vivido uma vida mais curta do que um ser humano adulto. Esses objetos são uma espécie distinta, que vive e morre em milhares de anos, em vez de milhões. de anos que são comuns em galáxias com jatos maiores."
Nos novos estudos, a equipa revisou a literatura e observações anteriores de mais de 3.000 candidatos a OSC, verificando 64 como reais e identificando mais 15 OSC. Todos esses objetos foram observados anteriormente pelo Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) do Observatório Nacional de Radioastronomia, financiado pela National Science Foundation (NSF), e alguns foram observados por outros radiotelescópios de alta resolução. “As observações do VLBA são as mais detalhadas da astronomia, fornecendo imagens com detalhes equivalentes à medição da largura de um fio de cabelo humano a uma distância de 160 quilômetros”, diz Readhead.
A análise da equipa conclui que as OSC expelem jatos durante 5.000 anos ou menos e depois morrem. “Os jatos CSO são jatos muito energéticos, mas parecem desligar-se”, diz Vikram Ravi , professor assistente de astronomia na Caltech e coautor de um dos estudos. "Os jatos param de fluir da fonte."
Quanto ao que alimenta os jatos de curta duração, os cientistas acreditam que a causa é um evento de perturbação de marés (TDE), que ocorre quando uma única estrela se aproxima demasiado de um buraco negro supermassivo e é devorada.
“Pensamos que uma única estrela é dilacerada e então toda essa energia é canalizada em jatos ao longo do eixo em torno do qual o buraco negro gira”, diz Readhead. "O buraco negro gigante começa invisível para nós e, quando consome uma estrela, bum! O buraco negro tem combustível e podemos vê-lo."
Readhead suspeitou pela primeira vez que as OSC poderiam ser alimentadas por TDEs na década de 1990, mas diz que a ideia passou largamente despercebida pela comunidade científica. “A hipótese foi praticamente esquecida porque se passaram anos antes que as evidências observacionais começassem a aumentar para os TDEs”, diz ele. Na altura da sua hipótese original, apenas três OSC tinham sido encontradas.
Avançando para 2020. Readhead, que interrompeu seus estudos sobre OSCs para se aprofundar em diferentes problemas da radioastronomia, decidiu que era hora de revisitar o tópico. Ele reuniu alguns de seus colegas no Zoom e eles decidiram vasculhar a literatura e eliminar objetos que haviam sido classificados erroneamente como OSCs. Nos dois anos seguintes, a equipa investigou mais de 3.000 candidatos a OSC, reduzindo o grupo a apenas dezenas que tinham os critérios para serem OSC reais.
No final das contas, começou a surgir uma imagem das OSCs como uma família totalmente distinta, com jatos que morrem muito antes de seus irmãos gigantescos, como os da extremamente poderosa Cygnus A, uma galáxia que emite jatos extremamente poderosos que brilham intensamente em comprimentos de onda de rádio. Esses jatos se estendem por distâncias de cerca de 230 mil anos-luz em cada direção e duram dezenas de milhões de anos. Em contraste, os jatos CSO estendem-se até cerca de 1.500 anos-luz, no máximo, e desaparecem em cerca de 5.000 anos.
De acordo com os astrônomos, os jatos CSO provavelmente se formam quando um buraco negro supermassivo se aproxima não de qualquer estrela, mas de uma estrela substancial.
“Os TDEs que vimos anteriormente duraram apenas alguns anos”, diz Ravi. "Pensamos que os notáveis TDEs que alimentam os CSOs duram muito mais tempo porque as estrelas perturbadas são muito grandes em tamanho, muito massivas, ou ambos."
Ao analisar a variada coleção de imagens de rádio do CSO, os investigadores dizem que podem rastrear como os objetos envelhecem ao longo do tempo, quase como olhar para um álbum de fotografias da vida de um CSO para observar como os seus jatos evoluem. Os CSOs mais jovens têm jatos mais curtos que estão mais próximos dos buracos negros, enquanto os objetos mais antigos têm jatos que se estendem mais para fora do buraco negro. Embora a maioria dos jatos morra, os cientistas estimam que um em cada 100 terá vida longa como os de Cygnus A. Nesses casos raros, as galáxias provavelmente estão se fundindo com outras galáxias, um processo turbulento que fornece um grande quantidade de combustível.
Se as descobertas de Readhead e da sua equipa forem confirmadas com observações adicionais, os CSOs fornecerão um caminho totalmente novo para estudar como as estrelas massivas nos centros das galáxias interagem com buracos negros supermassivos.
“Estes objetos são de facto uma população distinta com a sua própria origem distinta, e cabe-nos agora aprender mais sobre eles e como surgiram”, diz Readhead. “Ser capaz de estudar estes objetos em escalas de tempo de anos a décadas, em vez de milhões de anos, abriu a porta para um laboratório totalmente novo para estudar buracos negros supermassivos e as muitas surpresas inesperadas e imprevisíveis que eles guardam.”
