Astrônomos da Universidade de Varsóvia, da Polônia e de outros lugares detectaram uma nova estrela variável Cefeida clássica. A estrela recém-descoberta, que recebeu a designação OGLE-GD-CEP-1884, tem o período de pulsação mais longo conhecido entre essas variáveis na Via Láctea. A descoberta foi detalhada em um artigo de pesquisa publicado em 29 de março no servidor de pré-impressão arXiv.
Variáveis cefeidas (ou Cefeidas) são estrelas luminosas, amarelas, de ramos horizontais, que mudam seu brilho com o tempo, como resultado de pulsações estelares regulares. Dado que os seus períodos de variação estão intimamente relacionados com a sua luminosidade, os astrônomos utilizam-nos para medir distâncias interestelares e intergalácticas.
As Cefeidas Clássicas, também conhecidas como Cefeidas da População I, sofrem pulsações com períodos muito regulares da ordem de dias a meses. Dado que a sua pulsação e parâmetros estelares estão estritamente ligados, estas variáveis também são usadas como base de teste para teorias de evolução estelar.
Agora, uma equipa de astrônomos liderada por Igor Soszy?ski, da Universidade de Varsóvia, relata a descoberta de uma nova variável desse tipo. A nova estrela, que tem um período de pulsação relativamente longo, foi identificada com o Telescópio de Varsóvia no Observatório Las Campanas, no Chile, como parte do Experimento de Lentes Gravitacionais Ópticas (OGLE) – um levantamento do céu de longo prazo que envolve observações fotométricas regulares de cerca de dois bilhões de estrelas na nossa galáxia e nas Nuvens de Magalhães.
“Relatamos a descoberta da Cefeida clássica OGLE-GD-CEP-1884 (= GDS J1535467-555656) com o período de pulsação mais longo conhecido em nossa galáxia”, escreveram os pesquisadores no artigo.
De acordo com o estudo, OGLE-GD-CEP-1884 tem um período de pulsação de aproximadamente 78,14 dias – o mais longo conhecido nas Cefeidas galáticas clássicas. O período de pulsação de OGLE-GD-CEP-1884 é quase 10 dias mais longo do que o da segunda Cefeida de período mais longo na Via Láctea – S Vulpeculae.
OGLE-GD-CEP-1884 tem magnitude de banda V de 16,83, velocidade radial média de -72,3 km/s e sua idade é estimada em 22 milhões de anos. Os astrónomos notaram que estes parâmetros tornam esta estrela provavelmente a Cefeida Galática mais luminosa e mais jovem. A distância até OGLE-GD-CEP-1884 foi medida em cerca de 14.500 anos-luz.
Os astrônomos notaram que é surpreendente que OGLE-GD-CEP-1884 não tenha sido identificada anteriormente como uma Cefeida clássica de longo período, dado que é uma estrela bastante brilhante no céu, particularmente em comprimentos de onda mais longos. Portanto, eles supõem que pode haver mais Cefeidas na Via Láctea que permanecem não detectadas.
"A descoberta de OGLE-GD-CEP-1884 sugere que as Cefeidas ULP também estão presentes em nossa galáxia, provavelmente nas regiões fortemente afetadas pela extinção interestelar. Esta descoberta ressalta a necessidade de pesquisas atuais e futuras do céu adotarem métodos mais eficientes de detecção e classificação de estrelas variáveis", concluem os autores do artigo.
